COMMENTARY

Here’s another idea that’s too big for the strip format. I’m just really pushing the boundaries of what a strip can do.  Thankfully, I don’t have anything like a syndicate to answer to, so I can do this, get this idea out of the way, and regret not expanding it two strips later. Still, it works alright. The pacing leading into the two word last panel is nice. It hits.

Question: Music

I've gotten a lot of new music lately.  I'm a new music fiend.  Most people my age (I'm 31) have pretty much tapped out their desire for new music.  Instead, they prefer the hits of their youth, or their college years.  At some point, new music just lost them and it wasn't worth the effort to find new bands worth listening to.  Maybe they're too busy now or they only listen to the radio (which has been playing the same 12 songs for, oh, about 10 years now).  I dunno.  I just know that my peers still listen to hair rock and think "pissing the night away" is a great bridge to "get(ting) knocked down."

That's just not me.  I like new music.  I devour new music. Here's a short rundown of what I've been into lately:

The Airborne Toxic Event - A recent discovery.  They do a great kind of noisy indie rock that I like a lot.  Very catchy and not a bad song on their debut album. Choice cuts: Gasoline and Sometime Around Midnight.

James - Remember Laid?  I'd never heard anything from these guys since then but their latest album, Hey Ma, is one of the best I've heard this year.  Choice cuts: title track, Of Monsters and Heroes and Men, and Waterfalls.

The National -Their album, The Boxer, showed up on a lot of lists last year as the best of the year.  I finally got around to purchasing it a couple months ago and I haven't stopped listening to it since.  Choice cuts: Fake Empire and Slow Show.

Devotchka - One of my most favorite bands.  I recently picked up both How It Ends and Una Volta. Amazing, amazing albums.  They do this gypsy/mexicali/rock sound that is unlike anything anyone else is doing.  Choice cuts: How It Ends and Queen of the Surface Streets.

Kings of Leon - Heard them for the first time on Saturday Night Live the other night.  Wow.  I need to get some more stuff by them.  Right now, I just have Only the Night, but I love it all. They do this kind of fuzz rock.  Choice cuts: Use Somebody and Revelry.

Keane - Perfect Symmetry is fantastic.  Classic Keane with a bit of electronica thrown in.  Almost relentless in its pace.  And--for the first time--guitars!  Choice cuts: title track and Better Than This.

So my question is this:  What do readers of the SuperFogeys listen to?  Everybody has their own taste, and I love finding out what people listen to. And hey, if you're not into new music, that's cool.  I shared with you, share with me?

Next Week:

Chapter 5, "The Redemption of Dr. Rocket" comes to a close and you get a peek at the cover to Collection #4.

you the man with the plan but looks like tangerine is looking to put the squeeze on you.

You youngsters and your hippity hoppity music!

I'm going the other direction. I just discovered the kick fananski talent that was Jerry Reed. Man, what a talent.

Great Page. I'm eager to see T implode.

I guess they didn't learn from the Pink Shade incident that reformed villains don't get mercy either. Ooh, and yay for Kings of Leon! They're among my favorite groups. And oddly enough, I prefer the music of my parents' youth instead of my own (40s, 50s, and 60s).

Brock, I am nominating Worth Gowell for the Reuben as well as you. FYI.

Ps - Would you care for a dill pickle on the side?

oh boy....it's gettin' edgy up in here.

Music: If you're liking Kings Of Leon you should check out the latest disk from Plain White T's. Great indie pop. Not a fan of National's new album. I just can't get into it.

So apparently CS has been reduced to saying "No" a lot. He can punch a cripple but not deck an obnoxious idiot. Hmm, I seem to be channelling Swifty... "that's real $%*&@ing heroic"

But even Dr. Rocket should know that he could kill Tangerine, divide his body into small, bite-sized pieces, feed some of them to stray dogs, incinerate some others, and launch the rest into a wormhole... and Tangerine would STILL come back. Because the popular idiots always come back -- only the unpopular ones actually stay dead.

I haven't checked out Keane's new album yet, but I really enjoyed their first one. Funny my wife used to work at MTV, which is how I got the first album. They did free concerts during lunch there and they couldn't give the the cds away then they sorta blew up like 3 years later. I guess blew up might be overstating things, but they decent radio play I think.

Tyler D. - It all comes to a head on Tuesday. I can say this for sure: somebody is going to lose this fight!

Chip - Hey, you're not THAT much older than me. Sheesh. Jerry Reed? I'll have to look that guy up.

Amanda - Yeah, you'd think the Pink Shade incident would have been enough for alarm, but I think CS has a bit of a blind spot when it comes to Tangerine, unfortunately. Where are you from? I hear Kings of Leon is a much bigger deal in Europe, but you don't hear much about them here.

Jarrett - A Reuben? Wow! That's the National Cartoonist Society award, right? Are you a member? Is that how that works? I know almost nothing about it all. (In fact, I had to look up "Reuben" on Wikipedia to even know what you were talking about!) In any case: Wow, thanks!

Tom - It could be very, very bad. You'll see on Tuesday. And hey, everybody should click on Tom's name and check out his great comic "Marooned." It's funny and good-natured. I think SF fans will dig it.

Wit - Plain White T's huh? I confess the only thing I know by them is "Hey There, Delilah" but I'll check out the new one and see what it's about. Thanks, Wit.

Scott - You've pretty much summed up CS's current state. As for Tangerine...I dunno about that. He's becoming INCREASINGLY unpopular. I would be worried about him.

Michael D. - The first Keane album is a classic, in my opinion. I listened to that one for about 2 years straight. I know they're much, much bigger in Europe, so you tale does not surprise me. But...things have mostly turned around for them here. And that's good because there isn't really any other band that sounds like them. They're a nice break from guitar-driven rock, but man can they reach the rafters with the best of 'em.

(OO) like in the movies... why do bad guys talk too much, and why....... oh why, did you have to demonstrate the "button push" Dr. Rocket, why?!?!?!?!

*& here I thought I was hip... listening to the music that I listen to.... but then again, I will agree with Chip and say "You youngsters and your hippity hoppity music!".........

Heidi G. says...

Bon Iver, MGMT, Beach House, Ben Kweller, Yael Naim to name a few. I'm going to go check out Devotchka now per your recommendation. Loving the strip, as per usual!!

Brock says...

posted 10/23/08 9:57 am

Japlander - Well, don't forget that DR was trying to make a point. He wasn't REALLY ever gonna do that to Tangerine. He had a point to make and he made it and...it doesn't look like it's working out for him.

Heidi G. - Is this who I think it is? I'm familiar with the names you've dropped, but haven't really known where to start with their music. I really like MGMT's Time to Pretend (even though I had to do some editing in Garage Band), but what other song by them would you recommend?

Scott says...

posted 10/23/08 10:11 am

Me, worried about -- that is, concerned for the well being of -- Tangerine? At least Swifty didn't cackle maniacally when Jerry was shot...

It's not so much Tangerine specifically as it is the character type -- Wolverine, Lobo and "Stone Cold" Steve Austin are all in the same boat that I'd love to send to the bottom.

Heidi G(arvin) says...

posted 10/23/08 2:40 pm

Yeah, you'll have to edit most if not all of MGMTs stuff but other songs I like are "electric feel" and "weekend wars," pretty much anything off of their latest album "oracular spectacular." My favorite songs by the others are "skinny love" by Bon Iver, "heart of chambers" by beach house, "run" by Ben Kweller and "new soul" by Yael Naim.

Evil Robot says...

posted 10/23/08 3:03 pm

Tangerine prob doesn't care if the device kills him. He's all ready in an old folks home how much worse could it get? And hey Scott.... I love STONE COLD he's my favorite wrestler don't be diss'n my man yo! Or the head locks wil be a coming!!

Brock says...

posted 10/23/08 3:35 pm

Scott - I hear ya. Seriously, I do. I have enjoyed the odd Wolverine comic here and there, but his mainstreaming is something that has been odd and a little unsettling to me.

Heidi G. - I knew it was you. Had no idea you were still reading. I'm DEFINITELY going to be checking out those songs. I'll let you know how it goes. Thanks! Let me know what you thought of Devotchka. Honestly, "How It Ends" is my all-time favorite song.

Evil Robot - Whoa-ho! I see a throw down coming! And how much worse could it get for Tangerine? Oh, come now...it can ALWAYS get worse.

kavonn says...

posted 10/23/08 8:24 pm

Personally I think Tangerine isn't thinking about the consequences right now. Forethought isn't one of his specialties. Otherwise he might not have fallen into the DT trap. And Rocket might not set it off, but someone else nearby might.
One other thing - he isn't Healer's dad, is he? When are we gonna see him?

Irma says...

posted 10/23/08 9:55 pm

Ooooh! Suspense! NICE!

What do I listen to? Holy cow. Let me check thought my over 900 CDs...

Seriously, I listen to a LOT of different things, ranging from Aerosmith, U2, Buckcherry ,Lenny Kravitz, Sammy Hagar to Jamiroquai, Robbie WIlliams, Moloko... on and on and on. Honestly I could write forever. But I will say that we finally got the Keane album yesterday! Which is not a day too soon since it's just a week until I see then live!

Brock says...

posted 10/23/08 10:34 pm

Kavonn - You're right about one thing--Tangerine has only one thing on his mind. As for the Healer's dad...man, what are you even talking about!?

Irma - 900! Wow. That's quite the diverse taste you've got there. U2 is in my top 5, for sure. Count me jealous, I'd love to see Keane live.

amanda says...

posted 10/23/08 10:44 pm

Brock, I'm from Austin ^.~ They're, in fact, playing here on Saturday at the Music Hall.

kavonn says...

posted 10/23/08 10:48 pm

We haven't seen the Healer's dad yet, that's what. Maybe he has summat to do with this, more likely not, but hey, I'm reaching.

Brock says...

posted 10/23/08 11:18 pm

Amanda - Man, Austin gets everybody, doesn't it? Again, jealous.

Kavonn - Oh, you're talking about that little meeting the Healer had with the Third Man back in Chapter 2? Oh, I'm sure that was nothing.

Irma says...

posted 10/24/08 12:19 am

Yeah I saw them live here a few years ago. It was a last minute thing... we decided to buy both their albums and then tix to the show about a week before the concert. And it was AWESOME. So of course I'm really excited about seeing them again next weekend.

And yes, my taste is pretty diverse. I love music! It's my passion and my religion!

Scott says...

posted 10/24/08 6:52 am

Evil Robot: Headlock? Hey, at least that's better than the lame finisher move Stone Cold uses. Or slashing stuff with claws. Or ANYTHING Lobo does.

Brock says...

posted 10/24/08 9:50 am

Irma - Wow, what an introduction to a great band! Have you heard their version of "Under Pressure?" Honestly, I like it better than the original.

Scott - Lobo's popularity still stupefies me.
