THE BIG 200!
Ho dang. I've been teasing it for weeks and it's finally here. Whether or not it was worth the wait is up to you, but overall I'm pretty happy with it. Those who have been paying close attention probably found this episode extra special, but I think it stands pretty well on its own. Always a goal of mine, but not always accomplished.
LOOKING BACK
I know there are at a lot of webcomics that have hit the big 200 and have gone quite far beyond. Some of them even do it within a year! (My hat's off to you guys.) But for me, the road to 200 was a 2 and a half year journey and if you had told me back in September of 2006 that I would make this far with this project--and that there'd be a spinoff in the form to SuperFogeys Origins to boot!--I'd have laughed in your face and spit warm Kool-Aid on your mother's grave (because taking things too far is never far enough).
As Tad (the guy who gave me the idea for SF in the first place) remarked yesterday in the comments, looking back on the humble beginnings of SF is a bit like looking at the crude Bart Simpson from the Tracy Ullman days (all the young kids say "Wha?"). It's kind of sad what I was trying to pass off as legitimate comicking.
So here SF is now and I, personally, believe it to be better than ever. I know I'm more satisfied with the work I'm producing and I feel like the storyline has gotten some real momentum. (Espeically with today's strip. You'll get a sense of what this means for the future in the coming weeks. And don't worry about lingering questions about Dr. Rocket--I'm about to explain everything.)
But...even with all that being true, I don't think anything will ever match the feeling I had the first time I posted a SF strip online and got those great, positive, encouraging responses. That first strip was crude, to be sure, but no one made a bit deal out of that and they just enjoyed it for what it was. Those early comments gave me quite the high and got my mind and drawing hand working overtime.
I really want to thank all of you for coming here week in and week out. Especially to those of you that are kind enough to share your thoughts about SF with me. And MOST especially thanks to those of you that have been with me right from the beginning and are still here now--you know who you are.
SUPERFOGEYS MEMORIES
In the spirit of that, please feel free comment and theorize about today's strip, but if you have a favorite SF moment from the past couple years--whether it be a favorite gag, storyline, character, story arc or something else entirely--I'd love to hear about it. Let's share.
For me, I think Episode 12 will, perhaps, always be my favorite. I think only about half of you got it, but for me it was a joke that surprised me in its efficiency and bizarreness. Plus, it's one of the few strips from Chapter 1 that don't look like zombie dog vomit. And, hey, SPACE PIG DEBUT!
INKS
I had a ton of fun inking today's strip. Anyone who has caught my comments here and there about the art of SF knows that I find pencilling to be a chore, but inking is great fun for me. I was really pleased how the last panel of today's strip turned out, so I thought I'd share the unaltered inked version for anyone who loves pure black and white comic art like I do.
Next Week:
SuperFogeys Origins returns on Tuesday with a recreation of one of the early SF flashbacks TL Collins style! Then, on Thursday, Dr. Rocket gets an important phone call...

I didn't mean to imply that your drawings were horrible, just that the evolution of the characters is fascinating, as you said. I love how you get Fidel's hat and beard down pat. It is hilarious to me, imagining Fidel partying it down. He was quite the ladies man in his day, and I imagine 60 years of being a totalitarian communist dictator didn't help reform him of that.Tad says...

200 is a wonderful milestone and I congratulate you, but at your current pace of one a week, by the time you get to #1000, I'll be qualifying for a senior citizen discount. Less talky-talky, more drawy-drawy. ;-)"Hubba hubba" on the bikini babe, BTW.

Brock -Congratulations on 200! Can't wait to see where it goes from here. As far as a favorite I would have to go back and narrow it down, as I have had days where the humor has come up and bitten me from behind. I always look forward to Tuesday and Thursday with SF. Keep up the great work!

Way to go, Brock. 200! Congrats! You're gonna hate me, but, as angry as I was that DR was murdered, I'm still disappointed he isn't dead. It undermines what was a VERY dramatic moment in the SF tale. While I hated that he was dead, I seriously appreciated and admired the bold storytelling you were employing.
This is a great page, though. Despite your lack of appreciation of your own pencilling chops, I think you are unbelievable talented. I really love your work.

It's ok, I'm here!I am so excited that you've hit 200! I made sure to check it last night, but I had a massive headache and needed to go to sleep.
I knew he wasn't dead. At least, I did for a while...I don't remember why I knew...but I did...haha.
This is a great strip, great work!

argonassistant - Dr. Rocket fan, I take it?Frumph and Jesse - Thanks, sirs!
Tad - No, I know you weren't saying the drawing was horrible--that was all me. The comparison was very fair. I thumbed through the chapters yesterday and the change is pronounced, but gradual. Especially with CS.
I didn't know that about Castro. Fascinating. As for his appearance--thank goodness for Google Image Search.
Greg B. - I hope there comes a day when I do SF 5 days a week. That would be wonderful. Still, don't know that I'll ever get to 1000. That would be insane. Enjoy the babes while they last--not something we see around here too much!
DoctorParadox - Only time--as in the next few weeks--will tell.
Tyler D. - Cuban cigars...I gotcha, no worries. I'm glad everybody seems to be on board with DR's return!
Ed - Hi, Ed! Dr. Rocket is indeed alive. But...how?
StoneHydra - Thanks!
Bullfinch - Is he? I tried to draw him very frail, but you're the second person to tell me he looks good. More the point--has anyone noticed what he's actually doing?
Brock says...

Gillybean1 - Wouldn't you? If you were a guy I mean.DD - Sweet! We do so love our evil villains, don't we?
Si Civa - All I'll say for now is that I've laid a lot of clues for what the explanation is for all of this--dating all the way back to Chapter 2!
Sticky - Thanks, man! "humor came up and bit me from behind"--I love that. I think that describes perfectly why I like Episode 12 so much.
Chip - I knew there would be at least one naysayer and I knew it would be you. Thanks for not disappointing me--seriously. Totally appreciate what you're saying. I think the brutality and drama of the moment that ended Chapter 5 still stands and may yet still stand depending on how you take the explanation for all of this. All is not quite as it appears at face value.
Still, I know that for you the bolder choice would have been to remove Dr. Rocket completely and never bring him back. I know that's true and there's a part of me that really, truly wanted to do that. But...this was always the plan from the beginning and I think there's bolder, scarier storytelling choices coming up. Everybody's done the death of a major character, but has anybody ever...no, that would be telling.
Mike J. - Can't fool you. A lot of people really didn't believe he was gone and that's okay. For the most part, people seem to just be glad to have him back. Hope you're feeling better.

Ah, it all makes sense now...I remember tweeting you about the X on Dr Rocket on the SF banner, and asking why the X was taken off at some point. You told me that this was a mistake that happened during a redesign, and that it would be fixed at some point. Even though you never put the X back, I kinda forgot about it...until now. Dierna - Man, I knew Dr. Rocket was loved, I just had no idea how much!DGriff - Muwahahaha. Yeah, I confess I have a blast with this stuff. We STILL have not reached what I consider to be the tipping point of the SF saga, but little reveals like today's are what it's all about for me.
Tpiro - Not nearly so devious as you imagine. I was being completely honest with you about the X being taken off by mistake. It was supposed to stay on until today and it was only through an error in the redesign that that didn't happen. No deception intended my friend!
Tom - Thanks! Will do!
Chip - I wouldn't have it any other way.
Wit - Yeah, yeah. You're a genius, okay? Just you wait. I'll get you yet...besides, if you're so smart then you tell me what happened at the end of Chapter 5!

Well *I* thought he was dead. Still not sure that he isn't. Clones and stuff are tricky that way, you never can be sure one is pushing up the daises.Didn't tumble to the dancing either. I guess after you've gone from dead to not dead one doesn't question not walking to walking.

Skeptible - There are definitely many questions still to be answered regarding Dr. Rocket's "resurrection." All I can promise is that it will make perfect sense. Well, at least it will make perfect sense to me.Chaseman113 - Yes, the dancing he's doing in this strip doesn't seem very consistent with the wheelchair-bound ways we've seen up until now! But, as Skeptible said--he's supposed to be dead as well. The nice thing is that the answer to both questions is the same. So there you go.
Telegmo - Sweet! Thanks for that and thanks for letting me know you're out there. Always great to hear from a previously unknown reader. Makes my day.
Winston R. - Hey, thanks! Subnormality still rocks, by the way. You haven't disappointed me yet.
