WHAT IS JETPACKS ANONYMOUS?

This particular SuperFogeys Origins is a bit of a time warp for me. Before there was the SuperFogeys, there was Jetpacks Anonymous. A month or two before I created SF, I was doing some experiments in comicking (having never really tried before) and one of the results of those experiments was "Jetpaks Anonymous" (as it was then called because I wasn't vigilant enough and misspelled the word "jetpack"), a three-page story featuring a nameless character narrating his life to an unseen support group.

I always really liked the story, and once SF got up and running, I wanted to find a way to incorporate that nameless character into this little universe. My thought was, originally, to put the whole thing smack dab in the middle of the currently running chapter, Chapter 7 "Visiting Day." Once SFO became a running concern, I knew it would be better for that.

It's neat to see TL take on something I've drawn once already (and drawn very badly, I might add). This version of the story changes and adds some details to make it fit in with the SF mythology, but only those who've been with me since the MySpace days (3+ years ago) will notice, and even then only if they have really good memories. As such, this version will actually run four pages. It's gonna be good.  Hope you enjoy it.

Cool to have a next gen origin story! Looks as if Capt Spectacular's powers aren't genetic if his son didn't get em.

I see the lightning helmet and the ultra bushy mustache, but is that a v-neck t-shirt and...knee pads?

and speaking of jet packs, shouldn't we all have flying cars by now?

the mysterious freckled lass.

and i wouldn't imagine that caps powers would be genetic, considering they were given to him.

it would suck though, to have a superpowered dad but not be super yourself. I would feel like a failure all the time.

tom kinda reminds me of TLs alien in his comic, probably the mustache lol

Ah if only MMORPGs had been around for him he would have had a much healthier way to become a disconnected outcast. Still at least his form of rebellion involved wearing pants.

This one's terrific, I like the mono-toned color. I also relate to the character... my mother was constantly yelling at me as a kid to stop jumping off the garage. I used to jerry-rig cardboard wings taped with feathers to my arms, thinking it may help me fly. A lot of my dreams (even now) involve realizing I have the power to fly. I need to get me a jetpack, apparently.

Dierna - You would be correct in that assumption, although I can't say that it will be addressed directly.

THeasley - Dude, are we looking at the same art? That's a plain old black t-shirt and jeans. TL draws his knees a little knobby, but no, not knee pads.

Tyler D. - Thanks for mentioning the color! We're always trying new things here and I think TL did a great job establishing a particular mood.

Tad and RBH - Yep, thought you guys might! The big differences come in the next page.

Artisan54 - Very good. Yes, we're about to find out a lot more about the "freckled lass," though not so much in this story. Thematically, you're on the right track with this story.

EEN - And we can all be grateful for that.

DGriff13 - That's awesome. You're gonna find a lot to like in this story, I think. We've only seen Tom's childhood so far, but there's much more to come.

It seems like he's wearing knee pads under his jeans. And the shirt really does look a little v-neck-ish, at least in the first three frames. But that's okay. I can accept that I am wrong.

I was just looking back at my papers that I wrote, so it's nice to see Tom now and get to see the background. Love that you misspelled Jetpack initially.

THeasley - Okay, I see what you're talking about now. Yeah, you're wrong, but I can see it.

Mike J. - Yeah, you were right on with pretty much all of your analysis. You won't get too much out of Tom about it, but you will find out much more in an upcoming SFO. It's being drawn right now in fact.

"Nothing but the air all around me! It was exhilarating!

And that's how I broke my leg."

Sorry, couldn't resist seeing that joke in there.

But, uh, I got to say - are you saying you never did comics before SF? I mean, really never? Well, I guess you just have what it takes. That's great to know. Then again, I haven't done that many comics myself, and certainly never published. Maybe I just need more confidence. Anyway, maybe I misunderstood, but HUZZAH! SF is shaping together fabulous for you one way or another!

Oh. I was wondering lately. Is SF all you do - apart from that book I hear you're writing, I mean. It's my dream and passion to create comics but there's so much I don't know about comics, publishing, and surviving in the industry. I always thought I'd have to have a full time job and cartoon in my spare time, but obviously you have a family. Do you really get paid well enough to take care of them? Because that's more encouraging to me and what possibilities my future may bring than you may or may not realize.

CartoonistWill - Before SF I did write a graphic novel and do some inking. Nothing that was ever published though, and even that was really in the year prior to doing SF. Basically, I didn't start actively making comics until I was 28-years-old and SF is my first real work where I did everything. I don't know that I "have what it takes," but I am well-read and have found that I have an aptitude for learning through observation.

As for my job...yeah, I make pretty much no money from SF. I don't have a big enough following for that. I have a day job and I am able to take care of my family well enough, but SF is something I work on late at night. You'll find that's the case with most webcomic artists. Only a very select few are able to make a living off of it. Really, I'm not trying to make a living (would be nice, but I know that's tough to do), I'm just trying to make some money to justify continuing to work on SF. So far, no good. Really hoping that's gonna change.

Right, I understand. I wasn't certain if you had a day job or not separate from SF since I hadn't heard of it or your working late into the night on SF when you got home, or at least not that I remember. Anyway, concerning money and the future of SF, I hope everything works out - or at least if you have to stop that SF has a good enough ending. I will buy that book soon, by the way, I just have to check my expenses first. Take care, man!
