UPDATE - KRISHNA POSTS THUMBNAILS TO THIS PAGE (BOTH VERSIONS!) AND TALKS ABOUT WORKING ON SUPERFOGEYS ORIGINS IN A "MICROCAST!"
And you can check it all out right here!
THANK YOU, KRISHNA SADASIVAM!
A big round of applause, please, for the fantastic job Krishna Sadasivam did on the art for this story. He came in to help out when David Reddick had to bow out due to scheduling concerns, and did a marvelous job on it in the process. Krishna's unique take on the material even led to the last panel of this page, which was not in the original script.
Now, be sure and check out both of Krishna' great webcomics if you haven't already--PC Weenies and (my personal favorite) the autobiographical Uncubed! Well, well worth you time.
Thanks again, Krishna!
(Be sure and check back here later today for a link to the thumbnails to this page)
TH3RD WORLD WEBCOMICS SUMMIT
The Th3rd World brain trust got together last Thursday to outline our plans for the coming year and discuss some new approaches. Lots of great, forward-thinking ideas were bandied about and implemented. Things are gonna look verrrrrry different around here in just a few short months. If you're enjoying your SuperFogeys experience now, just you wait.
I'll say no more. Not now anyway. More later.
GUEST STRIPPIN' XMAS UPDATE!
Yesterday, I received my first guest strip from Don "Conduit Flux" Oskowski for the upcoming Xmas break. I'm pleased to report Don's might be my favorite of all the guest strips I've ever received, due in no small part to the special guest he managed to work in.
The gauntlet has been thrown down, folks. I know many of you have reported to me that you're interested in contributing and I sincerely hope you do. Deadline is Dec. 22 and you can find the full specs and details here (scroll down a bit)!
Thanks, Don!
STAR TREK ON BLURAY
I'm pretty excited for the release of Star Trek on Bluray today. I've never been a hardcore Trek fan, but I was raised on the original series and The Next Generation. The J.J. Abrams movie that came out earlier this year was, I thought, pretty much fantastic. It's not a flawless movie, but it's perfect in the sense that it makes you not care about the flaws.
I've been arguing with my wife, Erin, all year that she would actually really like the movie if she'd just give it a chance. "No way," she said. "I'm not watching anything called 'Star Trek.'"
She's not a geek like me, you see. Not by any stretch of the imagination. This is good. It means our kids have a chance.
Now, that's not the same as saying that Erin doesn't know good entertainment. She enjoys LOST quite a bit and Alias is one of her all-time favorite shows. Mad Men is appointment television for us. She unabashedly enjoys the Back to the Future movies and the entire Pixar canon. But, for all that, she has an inherent aversion to sci-fi. Just how it is.
The mistake she made was in going to Comic-Con with me this past summer. There she met Tom Racine, host of Tall Tale Radio. Now, Tom is one of these guys blessed with a voice that makes you believe EVERY SINGLE THING HE SAYS. Well, somehow, someway, Tom and Erin got to talking about Star Trek.
More than that, Tom convinced Erin to give Star Trek a try. She even promised.
So...today's the day. I don't know that I'll be able to convince her to watch it starting tonight, but it's gonna be soon. I'm kind of excited to see what her reaction is going to be. She's knows NOTHING about Star Trek. She'll go into it cold. Will it play for her? I think so. I hope so. We'll see. I'll keep you posted.
SUPERFOGEYS ORIGINS SCHEDULE UPDATE
Next week we begin the two-part story "When Tom met Ms. Missile" with art by Marc Lapierre. I had planned on running the 9-part "The Six Wives of Captain Spectular" after that (I know a lot of you are looking forward to it), but I realized last week that I'd have to divide the story in half over the Xmas break and I just don't want to do that. So...regular SuperFogeys Origins artist T.L. Collins will be coming back to us in December for the 4 or 5-part story, "Harvey the Science Rabbit, Part One!"
Harvey is one of those characters who generates a level of interest that is disproportionate to his actual "screentime." I know a lot of you have questions. You'll get some answers soon.
See You on Thursday with SuperFogeys 234! (It's gonna be a big one)

No disrespect to Krishna's art (which was actually worked pretty well) but I think this story was your first miss. I felt less like a loving expansion of the back story then the sort of padding they put in the back of spiderman's 5th series annual each year. Not much happened, we didn't learn anything new about the characters, all the humor really came from the art and over all I felt it lacked heart. And thusly denied the ability to call Captain planet it was a big step back from the Money Man, Tangerine's or Tom's stories. The last scene almost needs a "waa, waa, waaaaaaaa" sound effect at the end. I was really hoping to get more insight into the non-crazy Star Maiden but really I don't feel like I know anymore about her now then when the story started other then she doesn't like to be punched. I still think you do great work Brock but this story just didn't do anything for me.Tom Racine says...

I had no idea my voice had such power...I hereby vow to use it only for good. (Mostly.) And if Erin hates Star Trek and threatens to harm you physically, I take all responsibility! :)artisan54 says...

@evil emperor nickwith all do respect the title of this story is "Spy Girl vs. Star Maiden" its not an origins story just a past encounter. although the story is "fluff" it was fun. i do agree the ending kinda fizzled but, i dont mind.
@ Brock
i know you dont need me to stick up for you, but i wanted to share my counter points.
on the the strip: what are they fighting? its gooey, and hits hard to knock CS through the floor.
cant wait for the next arc. keep up the good work

@Artisan54: It is true that this story is "Spy Girl vs Star Maiden" but the title of this series is "SF: Origins".Brock says...

THeasley - I have no idea how you got from Star Maiden's hair to Brady Bunch, but kudos to you for making the connection. That's some kind of accomplishment.Tyler D. - Yep! You didn't know how right you were about that!
EEN - First off, I thank you for your candor. Always means a lot when people take the time and respect me enough to give honest-to-goodness criticism. I don't expect everyone to love everything I do like it's the best thing ever and it's nice to know when I've "missed."
As for the story itself...you're right in that this is a change of pace. After the one-two-three punch of Tanger, Herman and Tom, I thought something a little more fun might be in order. I was very much trying to do something that was the opposite of everything that I've done so far, so it's totally fair for you to call foul on that if it's not to your liking.
As for the fact that it's not technically an origin...maybe. I see this as the origin of the Spy Gal-Star Maiden rivalry--the first time they really threw down. But that's never explicitly stated, so the story can come off as a lark instead. I'm fine with that. My intent with SFO is to tell origin stories, but if I come across an idea that's good that's not necessarily an origin, I'm gonna do it. I was really wrestling with this issue not too long ago and someone rightly pointed out to me that anything pre-Chapter One of SF is an origin--all the stories tell how the Fogeys came to be where and who they are now.
I appreciate the fact that you didn't feel this story was up to snuff (and thanks for laying the blame for this at my feet--Krishna did a great job). It's only gonna make me try harder in the future!
Tom R. - Oh, it won't be me that she harms. It'll be you for talking her into it. Good luck to you both.
Artisan54 - I appreciate you sharing your thoughts on this. I don't see it as defending me. It's just good discussion. Have at it.
As for the gooey stuff...no idea what that's all about. It was just a visual I had. Can always go back later and figure it out for another story!

i just noticed that CS has a "right" hand for a "left" one. the only way this is incorrect is if all his fingers are broken.
