THE ANNOTATED "SIX WIVES" PAGE 2

While this is the first we've seen of the Captain's second wife, Betty Hofstadt, we've known that Star Maiden was one of Captain Spectacular's ex -wives for a while. Check out this flashback to see what we know so far. Come on back next for the full look into why they didn't stay together.

BIG ANNOUNCEMENTS LAST WEEK

Big thanks to all of you for the positive response to my big announcements last week. If you missed them, be sure and scroll down here.

One of the things I talked about doing more is sketch blog updates. I think it would be fun to sketch more--my characters or someone else's--and then post the results once in a while. As a tryout, I drew Spider-Man last week and shared it over Twitter. The response was pretty good. See what you think:

CAMI UPDATE

Haven't said much about Cami lately, and I know because of this strip some months back a few of you are invested in her. She's doing really well, though her development is still pretty slow. She's much more verbal than she used to be, though the number of sounds she can make is limited because of her poor vocal muscle control. She ends up saying a the same word to mean different things. For instance, "Bye" can mean anything from "Bye" to "Food" to "I'm fine," depending on the context. Still, it's really nice to feel like, almost five years after she was born, that I'm actually communicating with my daughter.

She hasn't had any more seizures since her last one, thank goodness. Although, this past week she got a cold and a lot of fluid went into her lungs and so we were on pneumonia watch. Well, I suppose technically she did have pneumonia (that's basically what having fluid in your lungs is), but she's out of the woods now, marking the first January in three years that we didn't have to hospitalize her for treatment of pneumonia. Usually, that's the direction a simple cold takes her. She just doesn't have the muscle control to cough out the fluid, and her body is too weak to fight off serious infection. This year, she was just a little bit stronger. Much to our surprise and delight.

Here's a recent picture of Cami that my wife Erin took of her while we were at Disneyland last month:

See you on Thursday with SuperFogeys 240! This is gonna be a big one, folks!

... Oh! Really dig the Spidey sketch. Only suggestion is to fill him out just a bit (not super muscle-man, just a bit more beef on the arms). The posture is great.

DD - Thanks for the notes on the Spidey sketch. These sketches are really just kind of a tossed off. Trying to keep them fast and loose. That said, yeah, probably a little thin in the arms, but I'm trying to break away from my rigid sense of cartoon anatomy a little. I really admire those who can contort and size up and size down the parts on a figure to make them stylized. (See: the work of Skottie Young) I probably need to either take it further than this or back off from the idea a little more. I'm sure you'll see more attempts in this vein as I sketch some more.

wow that last panel certainly packs a hell of a punch, that's possibly the biggest chunk of raw emotion we've had, the beauty of it is that we can see the litteral destruction of the area around them after the battle but we can also clearly see how much this moment is destroying spy gal inside

it's great to hear that cami is doing well, at least she uses "bye" for multiple meanings and not "no" which is usually a kid's favourite word, "bye" is much cuter

spidey looks pretty cool, i prefer your version to some others, yours is less contrived i think, more free and fun

This art reminds me of Spider-Man, actually. I love it!

TaintedRose - Thanks for your comments about that last panel. I hope you saw in the annotations above the link to the full story on that one. Rossana really drew the heck out of that panel. And if you think that's emotional...just wait.

You're right about "bye" being cuter than "no." Bye is just about the cutest word ever coming out of her little mouth.

Moral of the story:

If it's a redhead in purple--RUN.

But really, all I can say is WOW.

Love getting to the Star Maiden part. Feels more superheroey. But that's why the rest is great! Because I haven't seen superheroes have closer to normal lives before. Let's face it. Batman ain't hiding no long term honeys like a Mrs. Bat in Wayne Manor.

Glad Cami is doing good. It's a difficult situation and I'm not good with words, but you know I hope for the best for you guys.
