Unfortunately, the colorist of the Six Wives story, Jon Conkling, threw his back out last week and was not able to get the colors for this page done in time. Here's hoping he feels better and is able to return to us soon. When he does, you can be sure this page will be updated! For now, enjoy this great black and white piece by Rossana Bugini!

MONSTERPLEX STARTS STRONG...THEN FALLS

As most of you know, I have a comic, MONSTERPLEX, in this month's Zuda competition. Last Thursday the rankings were updated with MP in first place, which was fantastic! Thanks to everyone who helped us get there.

Unfortunately, the second place comic rose to the challenge and, as of yesterday, has taken the number one spot from MONSTERPLEX. But...it doesn't have to stay this way.

The SuperFogeys readership is big enough that we can easily take this thing. Without getting too specific, SF probably averages just over 1,000 unique hits a day. If everyone pitched in, joined TEAM MONSTERPLEX, and went over to support us on Zuda, a win would be in the bag!

What's really killing us right now are the "Add to Favorites". The second place comic has way more than MP, even though our traffic numbers are great. If all you can do is vote and "add to favorites"--GREAT!

I know we can take this thing if we all work together. Please, help!

THE MONSTERPLEX BLOG

The Monsterplex blog is a machine! Right now, there are multiple updates every day, including reviews, interview, behind-the-scenes stuff and, best of all, MONSTERPLEX artist David Schlotterback is taking your sketch requests! Head on over to check it out!

In case you missed it on Tuesday...

I have a comic in the monthly competition over at Zuda (the webcomics arm of DC Comics). At stake: a one-year contract with DC to keep making my comic. That's comic's name? MONSTERPLEX.

If you like SuperFogeys, I've got a feeling you'll really dig MONSTERPLEX.

The winner of the competion is based solely on popularity. This is where I desperately need your help. Here's a list of everything the Zuda overlords are looking to determine which comic they're going to sign:

1. Votes

2. Adding to Favorites

3. Star Ratings

4. Number of Comments

5. Traffic

To participate (vote, favorite, leave comments, etc.) you'll need to register an account over at Zuda (only takes a minute or two, tops). It's always been a dream of mine to work for one of the big two (DC or Marvel) and I'm hoping you'll join Team Monsterplex and help make that happen. I've never asked for donations to keep the SuperFogeys going, but I am asking for this!

Joining me on MONSTERPLEX are my office mate David Schlotterback on art and Th3rd World Publisher Michael DeVito on colors. Even if you think my writing is terrible (and if you do, why are you here?), please check out the great work these two guys are doing!

There's also a Monsterplex Blog where we're revealing behind-the-scenes info and updating constantly with news.

Also: Facebook Fan page.

Thanks to everyone who has voted so far and is supporting us! Don't forget to pop back in now and again to comment. You can't vote twice, but you can comment and visit as much as you want!

(Anyone looking for more detailed instructions about how to login to Zuda and vote should refer to this post. Thanks!)

TALL TALE FEATURES REBOOT

In other news...Tall Tale Features, the fantastic cartoonist collective I'm privileged to be a part of, has relaunched this week! Irma E. of Imy has done an amazing job redesigning the website from the ground up. You'll also find a bunch of new features, including Reviews and How-To posts. TTF has now shifted focus a bit to throw more of a spotlight on the Tall Tale Radio podcast, as we should.

You have got to check this thing out!

NEXT WEEK:

Meet the Captain's Fifth Wife on Tuesday on page 5 of The Six Wives of Captain Spectacular! I've got a feeling this is the one you've been waiting for.

I’m gonna cut right to the chase here: I have a shot at a
contract with DC Comics.

This is it. This is what I’ve been waiting to tell you for
months now. This is the “secret comics project.” What is it? It’s the story of a old movie theater that not
only shows monster movies, but features real monsters. It’s called MONSTERPLEX.

Every month DC Comics (publisher of Superman, Batman, Wonder
Woman, Green Lantern, etc.) pits 10 comics against each other on their
webcomics site, Zuda. For a few weeks, people are invited to rank, vote on and
praise or damn the comics until one emerges victorious (read: most popular) and
the creators of said comic are offered a one year contract to keep making it.

Yes, that means money. Yes, it’s thousands of dollars (not a
ton, but enough to keep doing it). More importantly, it means the little boy
inside me doing back flips will have his dreams come true. (He’s making me
sick. Who knew the spleen was bouncy?)

On Monday, Feb. 1st at Noon Eastern Standard
time, my submission, MONSTERPLEX, went live on the Zuda site. You can go check
it out right here, right now. Together with artist David Schlotterback (my office mate) and colorist
Michael DeVito (Publisher of Th3rd World Studios, the company that publishes my
comic, The SuperFogeys), I’ve created
what I think is a great comic. I hope you agree.

I hope you agree because this is where you come in. I would like you to join me on TEAM MONSTERPLEX.
Between the great work my creative team has done on MONSTERPLEX and the power
you hold as one who can access the interweb, I think we can win this thing. We
can’t do it without you.

So, how can you help? Lots of ways, actually. First and foremost is going to the Zuda site and
giving MONSTERPLEX attention and votes. How do you do that? Let me explain:

1. First of all, go to http://www.zuda.com Pretty cool, right?

2. Hit the “Sign Up!”
link in the upper right hand corner. You can’t vote or interact with the site
in any meaningful way without registering first (don’t worry, it’s painless and
DC Comics won’t spam you afterwards).

3. Follow the instructions to create your Zuda account. If
you want to load up an avatar, cool (don’t have to though). We’ve even got someMONSTERPLEX avatars for you to use at the bottom of this post that are all
ready to go!

4. Click on the Zuda logo in the upper left corner of the
screen to go back to the homepage.

5. Click on “VOTE” to go to the current competition.

6. Scroll down until you see MONSTERPLEX and then click on
that!

7. Now, this is the good part. There’s a whole bunch of
things you can do to support MONSTERPLEX and they’re all right here:

a. Click the VOTE button!

b. Give MONSTERPLEX a star rating under “Rate This Comic:”
(5 is great, but follow your conscience.)

c. Click the red “+” sign to “Add to Your Favorites”

d. Scroll way down on the page and leave a comment!

Yes, all of these things really do matter and are counted by
Zuda. Here’s how they put it, from the FAQ:

“HOW DO I HELP A
COMIC WIN A COMPETITION?

“There are a number of ways to help your favorite comic win

Well, I wish I was a rich man. If I was, I’d give everybody truckloads of cash
for the support (although I do think that would be against the rules, but
still…). So, no, it’s not about money. It’s about supporting a comic you think

“There are a number of ways to help your favorite comic win
a competition.
Page and on the Comic Information drop-down on the Comic Page itself.
high RATING. The favorites button and a five-star rating scale are in the Comic
Information section of the Comic Page. Even VIEWING and COMMENTING helps us
determine which comic is ultimately going to be number one!

“Finally, if you're really dedicated, you can download a banner from our Support Page to post on
your blog or personal web page. Nothing helps out a comic like bringing in a
new audience that can also Read, Favorite, Rate, Comment and especially Vote!”

Let me talk a bit about that last part. There’s no way TEAM

ROSSANA BUGINI WOULD BE THE MAN (IF SHE WEREN'T A WOMAN)

Rossana really just knocked this page out of the park. Yeah, I don't know what I was thinking either. Rossana was the one who hit on the idea of breaking it up and I think we can all agree that the story is the better for it. Not the last time she did this either. Just you wait.

For those wondering, Captain Spectacular is thinking back to something that happened way back in Chapter 5. Click here to see it in its entirety, and click here to see him discuss it.

And, hey, remember this?

THE QUINTUPLE-SIZED UPDATE THAT WAS NOT MEANT TO BE

If you follow me on Twitter, then you know that I had planned on coming back from my vacation with a quintuple-sized strip. That was crazy talk. Believe it or not, I do have a life and, much as I wanted to, I just couldn't do an update of that size in the time that I had. So, I split it up and you're getting the second half of that mondo-sized strip today.

However, I thought some of might be interested to see what could have been. The writing of Quintuple-Sized Strip That Was Not Meant to Be was, for some reason, quite laborious. As per usual, I typed out a quick script based on the outline I'd written for myself some months ago. But this time, once it was time to start drawing, I realized that it wasn't quite up to snuff and that there were some big ideas and callbacks that weren't getting the proper time. So, I began rewriting.

Now, dialogue is my favorite thing to write. There's nothing more fun for me to write than two people talking, and this was my one chance to have the Third Man and Captain Spectacular really go at it. I wrote what I thought was a pretty good exchange between them, and then did my best to segue from that to Third Man making his move on Tom. Sounded pretty good. I'd even go so far as to say that the dialogue for CS and TM was some of my most favorite. And it was 23 panels! Woo-hoo!

Only, not woo-hoo. See, when I looked at what I had planned as a whole, I saw that my "funny" exchange (it was now getting less funny) just didn't fit at all. This was a serious moment, something I'd been building up to since at least Chapter 5, and I what was I doing instead? Spending way too much time on this comedy routine.

So, I went back to the script and just cut the whole thing out. This was a hard thing to do and I really wrestled with it. I liked the exchange. But...it wasn't servicing anything, so out it went. Now I had a much tighter story and more consistent tone...and no time to draw it all. That's when I decided to split it.

So, I drew the first part, which you can see here. It was then that I quickly realized that by splitting up the Quintuple-Sized Strip That Was Not Meant to Be I was doing a part one with no weight to it. It just sort of...ended. So, I had to come up with something--some kind of payoff to the experience of reading part one. After a couple of drafts I felt like I got it right and off I went.

Below you will see the two documents that trace this creation process, though I don't expect you to be able to follow it at all.

First, is the script. The typed portions are the original, early script. Around that you will find the various alternative lines and tangents that I went on before hitting on what finally made it to your screen. Included in that is the original banter between Captain Spectacular and the Third Man.

In the middle of the page you'll notice a censored section. Sorry. That's future business. Can't let you see it. I make notes like that whenever I'm setting up something that pays off later. I always like to know what the answers are to the questions I'm raising and writing them down helps me to remember, even if I throw the paper away later.

Below that are the two versions of the last panel of page one that I came up with. See if you agree with the one I chose.

Pretty obvious why I don't hand letter, isn't it?

And now here's the original layout for the Quintuple-Sized Strip That Was Not Meant to Be. This is something I worked on while I was writing the script, so you'll see some of the remnants of the original 23-panel version that I abandoned in the erasings. I'm a terribly hard penciller.

Notice that Captain Spectacular has the same pose in three of the panels, all of them lined up vertically down the left side. Didn't notice that until I started drawing the full pencils, so I had to correct it in the final version.

Hope some of you enjoyed this peek behind the scenes. I've been asked before what my writing process is, and I think this is a pretty fair example of what I go through on any given strip.

NEXT WEEK:

On Tuesday, "Six Wives" continues as we see the fall of Captain Spectacular's marriage with Star Maiden.

Then, on Thursday....um, it's not lookin' too good for Tom, is it?

While this is the first we've seen of the Captain's second wife, Betty Hofstadt, we've known that Star Maiden was one of Captain Spectacular's ex -wives for a while. Check out this flashback to see what we know so far. Come on back next for the full look into why they didn't stay together.

BIG ANNOUNCEMENTS LAST WEEK

Big thanks to all of you for the positive response to my big announcements last week. If you missed them, be sure and scroll down here.

One of the things I talked about doing more is sketch blog updates. I think it would be fun to sketch more--my characters or someone else's--and then post the results once in a while. As a tryout, I drew Spider-Man last week and shared it over Twitter. The response was pretty good. See what you think:

CAMI UPDATE

Haven't said much about Cami lately, and I know because of this strip some months back a few of you are invested in her. She's doing really well, though her development is still pretty slow. She's much more verbal than she used to be, though the number of sounds she can make is limited because of her poor vocal muscle control. She ends up saying a the same word to mean different things. For instance, "Bye" can mean anything from "Bye" to "Food" to "I'm fine," depending on the context. Still, it's really nice to feel like, almost five years after she was born, that I'm actually communicating with my daughter.

She hasn't had any more seizures since her last one, thank goodness. Although, this past week she got a cold and a lot of fluid went into her lungs and so we were on pneumonia watch. Well, I suppose technically she did have pneumonia (that's basically what having fluid in your lungs is), but she's out of the woods now, marking the first January in three years that we didn't have to hospitalize her for treatment of pneumonia. Usually, that's the direction a simple cold takes her. She just doesn't have the muscle control to cough out the fluid, and her body is too weak to fight off serious infection. This year, she was just a little bit stronger. Much to our surprise and delight.

Here's a recent picture of Cami that my wife Erin took of her while we were at Disneyland last month:

Bit of a recap as it's been nearly one month since SuperFogeys 238:

When last we left the SuperFogeys, Captain Spectacular's son, Tom, was introducing his father to his new girlfriend--Dr. Rocket's adopted daughter Ms. Missile. Just then, The Third Man appeared in all his menace and made the claim that one of the assembled--Captain Spectacular, Swifty, Tom, Ms. Missile, Dr. Rocket--is about to die.

Anyone who owns a copy of The SuperFogeys Volume One knows exactly what story today's strip is referencing in flashback. You can find a preview of that story here, but if you wanna read the whole thing I'd highly recommend clicking on that Volume One link.

CHANGES TO THE SUPERFOGEYS IN 2010

A new year is always a great time to try out some new ideas and
rejigger the old ones. This year will be no exception. Here's what's
coming down the pike:

1. SITE OVERHAUL - That's right, this site will be getting
another overhaul. Whole new look and some whole new features. Should
take effect in the next couple of months. Chief among the new features
will be a new way of blogging that will be separate from the comments
attached to the strips. As such, the strip comments will be more about
the strip itself, and any news or other nonsense I have to say will go
in the blog. The blog will be featured here, on the main page, so
you'll never miss anything. My goal is to give you something every day
worth checking out--whether it be fan art, sketches, previews,
thoughts, whatever, etc.

2. MORE INVOLVEMENT IN TALL TALE FEATURES - As most of you know, I'm a member of a great collective of cartoonists known as Tall Tale Features. The biggest thing to come out of Tall Tale as been Tall Tale Radio,
hosted by Tom Racine. The rest of the site has been basically dormant
for the better part of a year. That's gonna change this year and part
of that change involves me more regularly contributing to Tall Tale
Features. You'll see a blog here and there from me, but the thing I'm
most excited by is that we're going to start collectively reviewing
webcomics that are submitted to us, and also critiquing our own
members' comics. More details on that as it happens, and of course I'll
always let you know when there's new content on that site from me
that's worth checking out.

3. NON-SUPERFOGEYS PROJECTS -

Last year at this time I changed my SuperFogeys schedule by
introducing SuperFogeys Origins (which I write but other artists draw)
and down-sizing the regular SuperFogeys strip (which I both write and
draw and color and...you get the idea) to a once-a-week thing. I did
this in order to work on a passion project of mine, a memoir about my
father and growing up called, at the the time, Bullets and M&M's (I've since changed the name to Raised by a Dead Man).
I did this with the intent of having the book finished in one year's
time and then returning the regular SF strip to twice-a-week and, hopefully,
continuing SFO at the same time.

Well, the fates conspire. Not
only did SF take up more of my time this past year than I thought it
would (putting Volume One together was quite the undertaking), but,
having never written a book before, I had no way to accurately
anticipate just how much work and how much time would be involved in
that. Quite a bit, as it turned out.

I'm happy to report that
I'm 65,000 words into Raised by a Dead Man, but I still have a ways to
go and then the work of getting it published begins, which is an entire
task unto itself.

So when will SF get back to its regular, intended
schedule? I don't know. I hope this year, but you never know. I confess
my priority is Dead Man. I think it's the finest thing I've ever
created and I feel like it's the most important thing I'm working on at
the moment. I have to follow that to the end.

Which is why it
will probably be surprising to you to hear that I'm also about to debut
an entirely new comic creation. Something not in any way related toSuperFogeys. This is something that's been in the works for about 2
years, and that I've always referred to as my "secret comics project." Well,
very soon now, the veil on that project will be lifted. This is
something I'm doing with a team, so it doesn't take up quite as much of
my time as either SF or SFO do. This project could end up being a
bigger deal than either of those, but rest assured that I remain firmly
committed to SF and all of you here.

You're gonna find a whole lot more about that soon. Stay tuned.

4. LESS COMMENTING FROM ME IN THE COMMENTS SECTION - New
demands on my time mean that something has got to give. Up til now,
I've made it a point to respond to each and every one of you in the
comments section below the strips. This is something that I've enjoyed
IMMENSELY. Sadly, I've decided to stop this practice in order to free
up the time I need to bring you more content. I'll still be active in
the comments section, but now I'll only be responding when I feel like
I've really got something to say, or to answer questions specifically
directed at me.

My hope is that this won't dampen your enthusiasm for commenting on
the strips. At this stage in the game, the monetary rewards are few and
your comments are really the fuel to my fire. Who knows? Maybe it'll be even more fun commenting and speculating without me coming in and adding my slightly-more-informed-on-all-things-SF comments.

5. DISCONTINUATION OF THE "SINGLES" - Up through Chapter 5 of
the SuperFogeys, each chapter was published in its own "single" comic
book. Late last year, those chapters were all collected into a mega
book entitled "Volume One"
and the publication of those "singles" was discontinued.

I, along with
Th3rd World, have made the decision to no longer publish chapters in
the "single" format, preferring instead to collect the chapters into
one large book when there's enough to do so. This was a hard decision
to make, but my sense is that most of you prefer the larger
collections. This does mean a long wait before you'll see a chapter in
print, but I think the wait will be worth it.

5. SUPERFOGEYS ORIGINS VOLUME ONE - Of course, you won't have
to wait long for the first SuperFogeys Origins Volume because that's
happening this year! This is gonna be a big one with an all-star cast of artists. Watch for it.

I think that's enough change for one day, don't you?

NEXT WEEK:

The Six Wives of Captain Spectacular continues on Tuesday as we meet both wife number 2 and wife number 3. One of those will be a familiar face. Can you guess which?

Then, on Thursday, The Third Man makes his move. Trust me, you don't want to miss this one.

Today's origin has been a long, long time in coming. I first wrote the script back in June of 2009. Rossana had the art done on the 9-page story a short two months later. Since then, the posting of the story has been delayed for various reasons, not the least of which was that I wanted to make sure I could schedule it properly and not break it up over a holiday.

Rossana is an artist based out of Italy who is new to the webcomics scene. Her background is mostly in the traditional comics format (which makes her a great pick for SFO, as you can see) and I think what you'll see over the course of this story is her severe attention to detail. The script for Six Wives was probably my most ambitious yet, spanning across 7 decades and requiring quite a bit of period detail. Rossana delivered in spades, as you'll soon see.

You can check out Rossana's other work over at her Deviant Art page!

THE WEBCOMIC OVERLOOK REVIEW

El Santo is one of the truly great webcomic reviewers. His review are always concise, insightful and informative. He's one of the few reviewers out there that I'll read even if I know know nothing about the comic in question, or even if I've decided that comic isn't for me. I just enjoy his writing that much.

And right now you can check out his review of the SuperFogeys. I encourage you all to go check it out and offer up your comments if you have them. I'd love to know what you think about some of the points he raises.

It's a well-considered and well-written review. This is the good kind of criticism where the critic isn't taking potshots--he's just giving his honest opinion. Thanks again, El Santo!

BACK FROM VACATION

I'm back! It's been a really nice break and I thank all of you for your understanding while I've taken some much needed time for myself and some other projects. Special, special thanks to the fantastic guest artists who lent their time and talents these past two weeks to ensure the great SuperFogeys content kept on coming. I was humbled by the variety, depth and quality of the submissions.

PREVIEW - SWIFTY AND THE PROPHECY

Those of you who have been paying attention on Twitter know that Jason Sigler, aka The Midnight Cartooner, co-host of great webcomics podcast Digital Strips and artist on Digital Strips Adventures and The Amazing Superzeroes, will be drawing the upcoming Origins story "Swifty and the Prophecy." This story will be set in the late 70's and I asked Jason to redesign Swifty's costume a little because of that. To reflect the times. This is just the preliminary work, but I thought you guys would dig checking it out:

the SuperFogeys with talent to spare have taken over this space and

From December 28th until January 11th, SuperFans of
the SuperFogeys with talent to spare have taken over this space and
will be bringing you their unique takes on the characters you all know
so well. Enjoy!

This marks the end of Guest Strippin' Xmas. Hope you enjoyed it as much as I did. You can check 'em all out starting here.

BEARMAN SETS HIS SITES ON DR. ROCKET

It was probably an image I could have gone my whole life without seeing, but Bearman fears nothing and, yes, he went there. Dr. Rocket on the toilet. My mind is no longer boggled because I can see it, plain as day. Thank goodness it's funny.

Bearman is a "hack cartoonist focusing on editorial and pop culture cartoons." You can check out more of Bearman's work over at his own comic, Bearman Cartoons!

See you tomorrow with pg. 1 of "The Six Wives of Captain Spectacular!"
